A Walk Along Block Run : A walk on the Wooddell Farm, March 2009 with my David W Wooddell and son Daniel L Wooddell, with Rocket the pretty good dog. We followed the natural fold of land from the cabin and pass the old Wooddell Spring, then walk past Harper's Pond and downward through Long Hollow. Well down the hill we pass the pointed rock, and thence to Block Run, around past the Laurel Break to the head of Block Run, where we take our road within sight of the border with the National Forest, and then up and up to the back field, then upper meadow, and then back to the cabin. Along the way we also see the Bear Waller up on top of the ridge, and even a vernal pool forming in a depression in the woods on top of the ridge, the top of the mountain rich in life, as shown with frog and salamander spawn we find in the muddy track that crosses the ridge between the trees.

Biography of a Farm : Portrait of a Farm The Wooddell Farm on Allegheny Mountain, Pocahontas County has been in the family since the 1870s when Charles S. W. Wooddell and his mother Margaret Varner Wooddell moved up there from the north end of the Greenbrier Valley. Owned by the descendants of Charles Wooddell, the farm continues as a fallow farm of historic significance to the family. With no electricity, running water, or connection to any modern communications, in the electronic silence of the Radio Quiet Zone centered on Greenbank in the valley below, the farm is a haven of quiet conservation.
